I’ve never felt so comfortable to be authentically me. My close friends and family realize how beneficial this program is because I have nothing negative to say about it. We are so much more than a writing program. We are literary innovators.
About the Program
Atlanta, Georgia is the third most popular city in the U.S. for film production. With the increasing demand for new film projects, the demand for screenwriters is growing. Located just outside the Metro-Atlanta area, the University of Georgia continues to partner with those in the Atlanta film industry and beyond to provide opportunities for its graduates.
This two-year Low-Residency Online MFA with a concentration in Screenwriting combines brief visits to Athens, GA with intensive time to write, and advice from industry mentors. An 6-day residency at the start of each 15-week semester helps students build a sense of community with their faculty and peers by participating in workshops, seminars, craft lectures, and panel discussions. After each residency, writers head home and build their portfolio during the succeeding 4-month online writing periods.
The Screenwriting track is designed for feature film and television writers who want to elevate their writing skills. Students work one-on-one with entertainment industry professionals, who serve as their mentors. Screenwriting students gain a deeper understanding of writing for the screen—big or small—with consideration of how evolving technology affects the industry. Graduates of the online MFA program walk away with at least one marketable screenplay in hand.
The University of Georgia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and School Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). Low-Residency MFA in Screenwriting

Learn on-campus, write off-campus
Each 15-week semester begins with a campus residency that features a demanding program of writing workshops in which students’ work is discussed and evaluated.
The residencies run for six days, with students immersing themselves in an intensive writing environment for a full, enriching week. The flexible schedule accommodates employed students who have two weeks of paid leave.

Build a lifelong writing community
The program format simulates the life of the writer — offering two things that every successful writer needs: a strong, supportive community as well as the freedom and solitude to write at home.
Build a sense of community with your peers and engage in serious, focused study with faculty mentors. Each residency includes daily seminars and craft lectures, as well as panel discussions and readings by faculty members, visiting writers, editors, agents, and other publishing and entertainment-industry professionals.

Work with experienced mentors to complete a screenplay
The screenwriting degree programs’ director — award-winning producer Nate Kohn — assembled a diverse group of writing mentors who will challenge students to do their best work, to explore the role of the writer in society, and to use their writing to make a difference in the diverse communities in which they live.
This committed and diverse roster of accomplished authors, literary agents, and other industry professionals work closely with students to inspire and support each writer’s emerging craft and voice.
